DJI Zenmuse L3 Aerial LiDAR Payload
Next-Generation Aerial LiDAR. Professional aerial services powered by DJI technology.
About the DJI Zenmuse L3
The DJI Zenmuse L3 is our primary aerial LiDAR payload. Its 1535 nm laser emits up to 2 million pulses per second and reaches 900 m by default (950 m @ 10% reflectivity at 100 kHz requires DJI enablement), delivering 3 cm vertical RMSE at 120 m while penetrating dense vegetation to reveal true ground topography.
Up to 16 returns — available at the 100 kHz and 350 kHz pulse rates — allow multiple LiDAR pulses to pass through canopy layers, capturing both vegetation structure and bare-earth terrain. The integrated dual 100MP RGB cameras with mechanical shutters provide colorized point clouds with perfectly aligned, ultra-high resolution imagery.
Key Benefits
- See through vegetation to true ground level
- 3 cm vertical / 4 cm horizontal RMSE at 120 m for survey-grade terrain models
- 900 m default detection range (950 m @ 10% reflectivity with DJI enablement) for high-altitude passes
- Up to 16 returns (at 100 / 350 kHz) penetrate dense canopy
- Dual 100MP mechanical shutter RGB for colorized clouds
Considerations
- Flies on the DJI Matrice 400 only (requires the Zenmuse L3 single gimbal connector)
- Complex post-processing for vegetation analysis

DJI Zenmuse L3 Frequently Asked Questions
Can LiDAR really see through trees?
Yes. The Zenmuse L3's returns — up to 16 at the 100 kHz and 350 kHz pulse rates — allow multiple LiDAR pulses to penetrate canopy gaps and reach ground. This creates accurate bare-earth terrain models even in dense forests where photogrammetry cannot "see" the ground.
What's the difference between LiDAR and photogrammetry?
Photogrammetry creates 3D models from overlapping photos—excellent for visible surfaces but cannot penetrate vegetation. LiDAR sends laser pulses that pass through gaps in canopy to measure ground. Use LiDAR for terrain under trees; photogrammetry for visual texture and detail.
How accurate is aerial LiDAR surveying?
DJI publishes 3 cm vertical and 4 cm horizontal RMSE for the Zenmuse L3 at a 120 m flight altitude (5 cm and 7.5 cm at 300 m), measured with a calibrated D-RTK 3 base station and DJI Terra post-processing. This meets survey-grade requirements for most topographic applications. Ground control points can further validate and improve accuracy.
