What is Pix4D?

Pix4D has been the industry standard for professional photogrammetry since 2011, developed by spin-off from EPFL in Switzerland. The suite includes specialized products for different workflows: Pix4Dmapper for traditional photogrammetry, Pix4Dmatic for large datasets, Pix4Dsurvey for survey workflows, and Pix4Dcloud for collaboration.

What distinguishes Pix4D from consumer-grade alternatives is the control it gives over the photogrammetric solution: manual tie-point editing, full processing parameters, GCP and RTK workflows, and quality reports that document the error metrics of each project. Pix4D publishes no blanket accuracy figure — the achieved accuracy is a property of the flight, the control and the terrain, and it is what the quality report documents.

At THE FUTURE 3D, we use Pix4Dmapper and Pix4Dmatic for projects requiring certified survey-grade deliverables. The software's advanced quality reports, customizable processing parameters, and CAD/GIS integration make it essential for infrastructure, mining, and engineering projects.

Pix4D FAQ

Is Pix4D worth the price?

For professional survey work requiring certified accuracy, yes. The $350/month cost is justified by survey-grade outputs that meet engineering standards. For simpler projects, DroneDeploy may be more cost-effective.

How accurate is Pix4D?

Pix4D publishes no accuracy figure in its product feature lists — accuracy is a property of the flight, the ground control and the terrain, not of the software. What Pix4D gives you is the control and the evidence: RTK and GCP workflows, manual tie-point editing, and a quality report that documents the error metrics of your specific project. We establish and report the achieved accuracy per project.

What is the difference between Pix4Dmapper and Pix4Dmatic?

Pix4Dmapper is the classic desktop software for standard projects. Pix4Dmatic handles larger datasets — Pix4D publishes hardware guidance up to 10,000 images at 20 MP (64 GB RAM, 300–450 GB of free SSD) — integrates LiDAR point clouds (LAS/LAZ), and offers GPU-accelerated processing.

Can Pix4D process LiDAR data?

Pix4Dmatic can integrate LiDAR point clouds with photogrammetry data for hybrid processing. This is essential for projects using DJI Zenmuse L3 or ROCK systems.

Is there a free version of Pix4D?

Pix4D offers a 15-day free trial. Pix4D also publishes a mobile capture app (PIX4Dcatch is the app named in its current product feature lists). For ongoing use, subscription or perpetual licenses are required.

Pix4D vs DroneDeploy: which is better?

Pix4D offers higher accuracy and more control for survey work. DroneDeploy excels at ease of use and collaboration. We use both depending on project accuracy requirements.

What computer specs do I need for Pix4D?

It depends on the product. Pix4D publishes: PIX4Dmapper — Windows, 16–60 GB RAM, GPU compatible with OpenGL 3.2 (2 GB GPU RAM recommended), SSD recommended. PIX4Dmatic — Windows 11 or macOS Sequoia/Sonoma, 32 GB RAM for 2,000–5,000 images at 20 MP (64 GB for 5,000–10,000), 150–450 GB of free SSD depending on dataset size, and any NVIDIA GPU supporting OpenGL 4.1 or higher. PIX4Dsurvey — Windows 10/11 or macOS Ventura/Monterey, 16 GB RAM minimum recommended.

Does Pix4D support RTK drones?

Yes, Pix4D fully supports RTK workflow with DJI, Trimble, and other RTK platforms. Direct geolocation significantly reduces GCP requirements.
