About the DJI Zenmuse L3

The DJI Zenmuse L3 is our primary aerial LiDAR payload. Capturing up to 2 million points per second with 3cm vertical accuracy, the L3 maps 400+ acres per flight while penetrating dense vegetation to reveal true ground topography.

The 16 vegetation returns allow multiple LiDAR pulses to pass through canopy layers, capturing both vegetation structure and bare-earth terrain. The integrated dual 100MP RGB cameras with mechanical shutters provide colorized point clouds with perfectly aligned, ultra-high resolution imagery.

Key Benefits

  • See through vegetation to true ground level
  • 3cm vertical accuracy for survey-grade terrain models
  • 400+ acres per flight for maximum efficiency
  • Up to 16 returns penetrate dense canopy
  • Dual 100MP mechanical shutter RGB for colorized clouds

Considerations

  • Requires M350 or M400 platform
  • Complex post-processing for vegetation analysis

DJI Zenmuse L3 Frequently Asked Questions

Can LiDAR really see through trees?

Yes! The Zenmuse L3's 16 vegetation returns allow multiple LiDAR pulses to penetrate canopy gaps and reach ground. This creates accurate bare-earth terrain models even in dense forests where photogrammetry cannot "see" the ground.

What's the difference between LiDAR and photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry creates 3D models from overlapping photos—excellent for visible surfaces but cannot penetrate vegetation. LiDAR sends laser pulses that pass through gaps in canopy to measure ground. Use LiDAR for terrain under trees; photogrammetry for visual texture and detail.

How accurate is aerial LiDAR surveying?

The Zenmuse L3 achieves 3cm vertical accuracy and 5cm horizontal accuracy with RTK positioning. This meets survey-grade requirements for most topographic applications. Ground control points can further validate and improve accuracy.
