About the DJI Zenmuse L1
The DJI Zenmuse L1 brought aerial LiDAR mapping to the DJI ecosystem when it launched in 2021. Its LiDAR module captures 240,000 points per second on a single return (480,000 with multiple returns), reaches 450 m at 80% reflectivity in darkness (190 m at 10% reflectivity in 100 klx sunlight), and publishes 10 cm horizontal / 5 cm vertical system accuracy at 50 m. That made airborne laser scanning accessible to survey teams already operating the DJI Matrice 300 RTK.
The integrated 20MP 1-inch RGB camera enabled simultaneous photogrammetry capture alongside LiDAR data, producing colorized point clouds in a single flight. The non-repetitive scanning pattern provided good coverage for terrain mapping, vegetation analysis, and corridor surveys.
The Zenmuse L3 has substantially advanced DJI's aerial LiDAR capabilities: a 1535 nm laser emitting up to 2 million pulses per second, a 900 m default detection range (950 m @ 10% reflectivity with DJI enablement), up to 16 returns at the 100 kHz and 350 kHz rates, and 3 cm vertical / 4 cm horizontal RMSE at 120 m. For projects requiring dense, consistent point clouds—particularly in forestry, power line surveys, and topographic mapping—the L3 delivers substantially better results per flight. Note that DJI lists the Matrice 400 as the L3's only supported aircraft.
For new LiDAR surveying projects, we deploy the Zenmuse L3 for its longer range, extra returns and tighter published accuracy. Contact us to discuss your LiDAR mapping requirements—our team can recommend the optimal payload for your terrain and vegetation conditions.
Key Benefits
- 240K pts/sec single return (480K multi-return) with up to 3 returns
- 10 cm horizontal / 5 cm vertical system accuracy at 50 m
- 450 m detection range at 80% reflectivity for efficient large-area coverage
- Integrated 20MP camera for simultaneous colorized point clouds
- Flies on the DJI Matrice 300 RTK
- DJI Terra software for streamlined point cloud processing
Considerations
- Non-repetitive scanning produces uneven point density across the swath
- The Zenmuse L3 reaches 900 m by default (950 m @ 10% reflectivity with DJI enablement) and supports up to 16 returns against the L1's 3
- Previous generation payload—DJI development focus has shifted to L2 and L3 platforms

DJI Zenmuse L1 Frequently Asked Questions
Is the DJI Zenmuse L1 discontinued?
The Zenmuse L1 has been superseded by the L2 and L3 as DJI's current aerial LiDAR payloads. While L1 units remain functional, DJI's development is focused on the newer platforms with dramatically higher performance.
What replaced the DJI Zenmuse L1?
The DJI Zenmuse L3 is the current flagship aerial LiDAR payload. Its 1535 nm laser emits up to 2 million pulses per second, reaches 900 m by default (950 m @ 10% reflectivity with DJI enablement), supports up to 16 returns at 100/350 kHz, and publishes 3 cm vertical RMSE at 120 m. It flies on the DJI Matrice 400 only.
Zenmuse L1 vs L3: what are the differences?
The L3 emits up to 2 million laser pulses per second against the L1's 240K/480K points per second, reaches 900 m by default (950 m @ 10% reflectivity with DJI enablement) against the L1's 190 m under the same daylight condition, supports up to 16 returns against 3, and publishes 3 cm vertical RMSE at 120 m against the L1's 5 cm vertical at 50 m. The L1 pioneered DJI aerial LiDAR; the L3 represents a generational leap — on the Matrice 400 only.
Is the Zenmuse L1 still accurate enough for surveying?
The L1 publishes 10 cm horizontal and 5 cm vertical system accuracy at 50 m (its 3 cm figure is ranging accuracy at 100 m, a different quantity), which meets many surveying requirements. The L3's far higher pulse rate and up to 16 returns produce more detailed terrain models, better vegetation penetration, and more reliable results in complex environments.
Should I upgrade from Zenmuse L1 to L3?
If point cloud density and vegetation penetration matter to your projects, the L3 is a substantial upgrade — a far higher pulse rate, a 900 m default detection range (950 m @ 10% reflectivity with DJI enablement), and up to 16 returns. Note that it requires a DJI Matrice 400; the L1 flies on the Matrice 300 RTK.
How much does Zenmuse L1 LiDAR surveying cost?
LiDAR survey costs depend on project area, accuracy needs, and terrain complexity. Contact us for a customized quote—we can recommend the optimal LiDAR payload (including the newer L3) for your specific project requirements.
