About the DJI Zenmuse L1

The DJI Zenmuse L1 brought aerial LiDAR mapping to the DJI ecosystem when it launched in 2021. Featuring a Livox LiDAR module capable of 240,000-480,000 points per second with 3cm accuracy at 450m range, the L1 made airborne laser scanning accessible to survey teams already operating DJI Matrice drones.

The integrated 20MP RGB camera enabled simultaneous photogrammetry capture alongside LiDAR data, producing colorized point clouds in a single flight. The Livox non-repetitive scanning pattern provided good coverage for terrain mapping, vegetation analysis, and corridor surveys.

The Zenmuse L3 has dramatically advanced DJI's aerial LiDAR capabilities: 5 million points per second (over 10× the L1's rate), frame-based LiDAR for uniform point density, and improved absolute accuracy. For projects requiring dense, consistent point clouds—particularly in forestry, power line surveys, and topographic mapping—the L3 delivers substantially better results per flight.

For new LiDAR surveying projects, we deploy the Zenmuse L3 for its dramatically higher point density and improved accuracy. Contact us to discuss your LiDAR mapping requirements—our team can recommend the optimal payload for your terrain and vegetation conditions.

Key Benefits

  • Livox LiDAR with 240-480K pts/sec and triple return capability
  • 3cm accuracy meets professional surveying requirements
  • 450m detection range for efficient large-area coverage
  • Integrated 20MP camera for simultaneous colorized point clouds
  • Compatible with DJI Matrice drone platform
  • DJI Terra software for streamlined point cloud processing

Considerations

  • Livox non-repetitive scanning produces uneven point density compared to frame-based LiDAR
  • The Zenmuse L3 achieves 5M pts/sec vs L1's 240-480K—over 10× higher point density
  • Previous generation payload—DJI development focus has shifted to L2 and L3 platforms

DJI Zenmuse L1 Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DJI Zenmuse L1 discontinued?

The Zenmuse L1 has been superseded by the L2 and L3 as DJI's current aerial LiDAR payloads. While L1 units remain functional, DJI's development is focused on the newer platforms with dramatically higher performance.

What replaced the DJI Zenmuse L1?

The DJI Zenmuse L3 is the current flagship aerial LiDAR payload. It achieves 5 million points per second (vs L1's 240-480K), uses frame-based LiDAR for uniform point density, and offers improved accuracy for professional surveying.

Zenmuse L1 vs L3: what are the differences?

The L3 offers over 10× the point rate (5M vs 240-480K pts/sec), frame-based LiDAR (vs Livox non-repetitive), improved accuracy, and better vegetation penetration. The L1 pioneered DJI aerial LiDAR; the L3 represents a generational leap.

Is the Zenmuse L1 still accurate enough for surveying?

The L1 achieves 3cm accuracy which meets many surveying requirements. However, the L3's dramatically higher point density (5M pts/sec) produces more detailed terrain models, better vegetation penetration, and more reliable results in complex environments.

Should I upgrade from Zenmuse L1 to L3?

If point cloud density and vegetation penetration matter to your projects, the L3 is a substantial upgrade. The 10× increase in point rate means fewer flights for the same coverage, and the frame-based LiDAR produces more consistent data quality.

How much does Zenmuse L1 LiDAR surveying cost?

LiDAR survey costs depend on project area, accuracy needs, and terrain complexity. Contact us for a customized quote—we can recommend the optimal LiDAR payload (including the newer L3) for your specific project requirements.
