DJI Zenmuse L2 Aerial LiDAR Payload
Accessible Aerial LiDAR. Professional aerial services powered by DJI technology.
About the DJI Zenmuse L2
The DJI Zenmuse L2 brings aerial LiDAR within reach for a broader range of projects. While the flagship L3 excels in dense vegetation, the L2 provides an excellent balance of capability and cost for corridor mapping, utility inspections, and sites with moderate vegetation.
With 240,000 points per second on a single return (1,200,000 with multiple returns) and a 450 m detection range at 50% reflectivity, the L2 captures detailed terrain data efficiently. Up to 5 returns penetrate moderate canopy while the integrated 20MP RGB camera provides colorized point clouds for visualization and feature identification.
The L2 is particularly effective for utility corridor mapping, construction monitoring, and topographic surveys where vegetation is not extremely dense. The lower cost compared to the L3 makes LiDAR technology accessible for projects that previously relied solely on photogrammetry.
We deploy the L2 when project requirements align with its capabilities—delivering the benefits of LiDAR technology without over-engineering the solution. For dense forest or maximum vegetation penetration, we recommend the L3 with its 16 returns (at 100 / 350 kHz).
Key Benefits
- 450 m detection range at 50% reflectivity captures terrain from safe altitude
- Up to 5 returns penetrate moderate vegetation effectively
- Integrated 20MP RGB for colorized point clouds
- Cost-effective entry point to aerial LiDAR technology
- 1.2M pts/sec on multiple returns provides dense point cloud coverage
- Lightweight design maximizes flight time
- DJI Terra integration for streamlined processing
Considerations
- For dense forest, the L3 with up to 16 returns provides better ground penetration
- Mounts on the Matrice 400, M350 RTK and M300 RTK (the M300 requires the DJI RC Plus)
- Lower point density than L3 for detailed vegetation analysis

DJI Zenmuse L2 Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Zenmuse L2 and L3?
DJI publishes no points-per-second figure for the L3 — it publishes a laser pulse rate of up to 2,000 kHz, against the L2's 240,000 pts/sec single return and 1,200,000 multi-return. The L3 supports up to 16 returns (at 100 / 350 kHz) against the L2's 5, and reaches 900 m by default (950 m @ 10% reflectivity with DJI enablement) against the L2's 450 m at 50%. The L3 excels in dense vegetation; the L2 is cost-effective for moderate vegetation, corridor mapping, and projects where L3 capability is not required. Note the L3 flies on the Matrice 400 only.
When should I choose L2 over L3 for my project?
Choose L2 for utility corridors, construction sites, road surveys, and areas with moderate vegetation. Choose L3 for dense forests, environmental surveys requiring vegetation structure analysis, and projects demanding maximum ground point extraction.
Can Zenmuse L2 see through trees?
Yes, but with limitations. The 5 returns penetrate moderate canopy effectively. For dense forest with multiple canopy layers, the L3's up to 16 returns (at 100 / 350 kHz) provide significantly better ground point extraction. We assess vegetation density to recommend the appropriate sensor.
What accuracy does Zenmuse L2 achieve?
DJI publishes 4 cm vertical and 5 cm horizontal system accuracy for the L2 at a 150 m relative altitude with RTK FIX and DJI Terra optimization—suitable for most topographic applications. When combined with ground control points, accuracy can be further validated and improved for engineering-grade surveys.
Is aerial LiDAR worth the cost over photogrammetry?
LiDAR penetrates vegetation that photogrammetry cannot see through. For terrain modeling under trees, LiDAR is essential. For open sites with clear ground visibility, photogrammetry may be sufficient. We often recommend combining both technologies.
What drone platform does Zenmuse L2 require?
DJI lists the L2 for the Matrice 400, the Matrice 350 RTK and the Matrice 300 RTK (the M300 requires the DJI RC Plus). These enterprise platforms provide the payload capacity, flight time, and RTK positioning needed for professional LiDAR surveys.
