The VLX 3 captures continuously while the operator walks, with no tripod setups, no scan positions to plan, and no per-position dwell time — where a terrestrial scanner spends minutes stationary at each of hundreds of positions. SLAM Technology Explained

The VLX 3 uses SLAM — Simultaneous Localization and Mapping — to build a point cloud while simultaneously tracking its own position within that environment. This is fundamentally different from tripod scanning, where the scanner’s position is known and fixed.

NavVis specifies 5mm point cloud accuracy measured in a dedicated 500 m² test environment, quoted as a local, one-sigma figure. Absolute accuracy across a whole building is a different question — NavVis states it depends on the size of the environment and is controlled with survey control points. Real-world accuracy varies based on several factors:

  • Steady walking pace without sudden movements
