Can LiDAR see through vegetation?

Yes, LiDAR penetrates vegetation to map bare earth underneath. Multiple returns capture canopy top, intermediate layers, and ground surface. The ROCK R3 Pro V2 records 2 returns per pulse (ROCK spec sheet), enough to separate canopy from bare earth in moderate cover. The Zenmuse L3 records up to 16 returns at its 100 kHz and 350 kHz pulse rates (8 at 1,000 kHz, 4 at 2,000 kHz), so denser canopy is where it pulls ahead. Dense tropical canopy may require multiple flights or ground-based surveys. LiDAR is essential for topographic mapping in forested areas where photogrammetry fails.
