Can LiDAR see through vegetation?
Category: technical
Yes, LiDAR penetrates vegetation to map bare earth underneath. Multiple returns capture canopy top, intermediate layers, and ground surface. The ROCK R3 Pro with 8 returns achieves excellent vegetation penetration. Zenmuse L3 with 3 returns works well in moderate vegetation. Dense tropical canopy may require multiple flights or ground-based surveys. LiDAR is essential for topographic mapping in forested areas where photogrammetry fails.
