Coverage depends on the aircraft, the mission profile and the terrain, and DJI does not publish an area-per-dock figure. What DJI does publish is the operating radius: 10 km for both the Matrice 3D/3TD (Dock 2) and the Matrice 4D/4TD (Dock 3), measured under specific test conditions. Flat, open terrain such as solar farms and agricultural fields lets the drone fly efficient grid patterns and covers the most ground per flight. Moderate terrain (construction sites, mixed infrastructure) reduces it, and complex terrain (mountainous areas, dense urban, offshore) reduces it further because of obstacle avoidance, altitude changes, and restricted airspace. We size dock counts per site rather than from a generic hectare figure.

Choose DJI Dock 3 for permanent installations on large or critical sites: it offers superior weather protection (IP56 vs IP55), wider temperature range (-30°C to 50°C), stronger wind resistance (12 m/s), and pairs with the newer DJI Matrice 4D / 4TD drones with O4+ Enterprise transmission. Choose DJI Dock 2 for portable or temporary deployments: it weighs 34kg (vs 55kg for Dock 3), is easier to transport and install, and has a lower acquisition cost. The number of missions per day depends on mission length, charge time and daylight. Each mission includes automatic launch, flight execution, return to dock, in-dock charging, and data upload. DJI rates the Matrice 4D/4TD at up to 54 minutes of flight time (47 minutes hovering) and the Dock 3 recharges it in 27 minutes (15% to 95% at 25°C); the Matrice 3D/3TD is rated at up to 50 minutes (40 hovering) with a 32-minute recharge in the Dock 2 (20% to 90% at 25°C). Neither dock swaps batteries — both charge the pack in place.

All modern drone docks implement fail-safe procedures for loss-of-link scenarios. The drone automatically executes a pre-programmed return-to-dock procedure if communication is lost for a configurable timeout period (typically 30-60 seconds). If the dock itself is unreachable, the drone can execute a safe landing at a pre-designated emergency landing point. These fail-safe procedures are a mandatory part of any EASA SORA application.

The DJI Dock 3 with IP56 rating can withstand heavy rain jets and is operational in most precipitation conditions. The Dock 2 with IP55 rating handles rain but is slightly more limited. Both docks have integrated weather stations that automatically ground flights when wind speed, precipitation, or temperature exceed safe operating thresholds. Both docks document dock-cover heating to clear snow and ice from the lid.

Yes. Drone docks require a reliable network connection for remote control, real-time telemetry, live video feeds, and data upload. A wired Ethernet connection takes priority on both docks; 4G is available through the DJI Cellular Dongle 2, which is sold separately and not offered in every country. Satellite connectivity can be used for remote sites. DJI specifies a minimum bandwidth greater than 20 Mbps and recommends greater than 40 Mbps for a better experience.
