EASA BVLOS Framework Overview
All 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein operate under the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulatory framework for drones. BVLOS operations fall under the Specific Category and require a SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) approval from the National Aviation Authority in the country of operation.
Open Category
Low risk, VLOS only, under 25 kg. Not applicable to dock operations.
Specific Category
Medium risk, BVLOS permitted with SORA approval. Required for dock-based operations.
Certified Category
High risk, passenger transport, large UAS. Not typically needed for monitoring docks.
UK exception: Since Brexit, the United Kingdom operates under its own CAA framework, separate from EASA. The CAA has its own BVLOS authorization process documented in CAP 722. While philosophically similar, EASA and UK CAA approvals are not interchangeable.
