Point cloud processing is one of the most hardware-intensive tasks in the AEC technology stack. A single terrestrial laser scan session can generate 10-50 GB of raw data, and a full building documentation project can produce datasets measured in hundreds of gigabytes. The difference between a workstation that handles this data efficiently and one that grinds to a halt comes down to specific hardware choices — and several of them are counterintuitive.

This guide covers the hardware requirements for point cloud processing, with specific recommendations by budget level and software platform. Whether you are building a new workstation, upgrading an existing one, or specifying hardware for a scanning team, these are the practical benchmarks you need. .

Why Point Cloud Processing Is Different from Other 3D Work

Before diving into specs, it helps to understand why point cloud work is so demanding — and why general 3D workstation recommendations often miss the mark.

Point clouds are not meshes or solid models. They are collections of millions (or billions) of individual measured points, each with XYZ coordinates, intensity values, and often RGB color data. Processing this data involves:

  • Loading massive datasets into memory — A 50-scan registration project can easily produce a 20-40 GB unified point cloud. The entire dataset (or significant portions of it) must fit in RAM for interactive work.
  • Spatial indexing and searching — Registration algorithms, cleaning tools, and visualization all depend on spatial queries (“find all points within X distance of this location”). This is CPU-intensive with a strong dependency on memory bandwidth.
  • 3D rendering — Displaying billions of points interactively requires a capable GPU, but the GPU demands are different from gaming or CAD rendering.
  • Disk I/O — Reading and writing large point cloud files is storage-bandwidth limited. An HDD bottleneck can make a powerful CPU and GPU feel sluggish.

RAM: The Single Most Important Specification

For point cloud processing, RAM is the number one hardware priority — more important than CPU speed, more important than GPU, and often the difference between “usable” and “unusable.”

The general rule: your RAM should be at least 2x the size of your largest working dataset. If you regularly process 40 GB point clouds, you need at least 64 GB of RAM — and 128 GB provides a significantly better experience because the operating system and software itself consume 8-16 GB.

RAM Speed and Configuration

  • Speed matters — DDR5-5600 or faster is recommended for current platforms. Point cloud processing benefits from memory bandwidth more than most applications.
  • Dual-channel minimum — Always install RAM in matched pairs for dual-channel operation. Four sticks in quad-channel configurations provide measurable performance improvements for large datasets.
  • ECC vs non-ECC — ECC (Error-Correcting Code) RAM is not strictly required but is recommended for workstations processing critical survey data. ECC prevents bit-flip errors that could silently corrupt point coordinates.

The Threadripper PRO platform deserves special mention because it supports 8-channel memory (vs 2-channel on consumer platforms). The CPU itself may not be dramatically faster than a Ryzen 9, but feeding data to the CPU fast enough makes the entire system more responsive.

Optimize Your Processing Pipeline

  1. Process on NVMe, archive to HDD/NAS — Keep active projects on your fastest storage. Move completed projects to archive storage.
  2. Use project-based folder structures — Each project gets its own directory with standardized subfolders (raw, registered, cleaned, export).
  3. Process in stages — Register first, then clean, then export. Do not try to do everything in one pass.
  4. Downsample for review — Create a lower-density version of large point clouds for quick review and QC. Work with full-density data only when precision matters.

Manage Memory Effectively

  • Close other applications during heavy processing. Chrome alone can consume 4-8 GB of RAM.
  • Use 64-bit software exclusively — 32-bit applications cannot address more than 4 GB of RAM regardless of how much is installed.
  • Set virtual memory/page file to a fast SSD — If your dataset temporarily exceeds physical RAM, having the page file on NVMe (not HDD) prevents catastrophic slowdowns.
